Interview: Darren Korb, Audio Director for Transistor
A couple of months ago, I had the pleasure of interviewing Supergiant Games’ audio director, Darren Korb. In this interview, Darren endures my newb questions about his work on Supergiant’s recent hit game Transistor. He shares a lot of interesting insight into his writing process, including:
- His approach to Form in his compositions;
- How he avoids falling into his comfort zone while writing for the guitar;
- Why he chose to avoid the more conventional orchestral sound for Bastion and Transistor
If you’re looking for a new action-RPG with great story and narrative, use the links below to play Transistor and Bastion. Both games are amazing. If action-RPGs aren’t your thing, you would be wise to listen to both soundtracks intently. Several times. Both soundtracks are excellent case studies in fusing genres to produce something new and compelling, and both were composed without a bunch of fancy gear. Darren used out-of-the-box loops in Logic, recorded his own guitar playing, and recorded the vocals in his closet.
NOTE: I planned on releasing this recording a couple of months ago, but ‘real life’ got in the way. I’ll release this type of content in the form of a Podcast in the future, but I didn’t want you to have to wait until then!
